Photodynamic Therapy

A Minimally Invasive Skin Treatment

If you’re looking for a non-surgical way to treat your actinic keratosis, acne or even superficial basal cell carcinoma, photodynamic therapy (PTD) is a great option. Photodynamic therapy is an innovative and effective medical treatment which uses a photosensitizing agent alongside a specific light source to destroy damaged cells while saving the surrounding healthy tissue. At Chang Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center, we may recommend photodynamic therapy as a minimally invasive treatment with great results.

How Photodynamic Therapy (PTD) Works

Photodynamic therapy has a two step process. The first part involves photosensitizers, and the second part involves light. The process works by:

Step 1

The photosensitizer, which absorbs light to cause a reaction, is applied to your skin—the agent is usually a topical cream.

Step 2

After sitting on the skin so that the photosensitizer soaks into the abnormal cells, we will expose the treated area to light with a UV laser or LED, either a blue light or a red light.

When the light mixes with the photosensitizer, it creates a reaction through a form of oxygen that destroys the abnormal cells.

What Does Photodynamic Therapy Treat?

PTD can treat a variety of conditions. However, at Chang Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center, we use this therapy to treat:

  • Actinic Keratosis: These are rough, scaly patches caused by sun damage that can sometimes turn into squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated. PDT is a very effective treatment option for actinic keratosis, and the cure rate is between 60% and 90%.

  • Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma: PDT can be used to treat superficial forms of this common type of skin cancer, especially in cases where surgery might not be the best choice. While it’s not a good treatment option for deeper or nodular types of basal cell carcinoma, it is a good, non-surgical option for superficial basal cell carcinoma.

  • Acne: Sometimes, PDT treats moderate to severe acne. It can target and shrink oil glands, kill acne-causing bacteria and even reduce inflammation. For patients with acne that keeps getting worse, keeps returning or is not responding to other treatment options, it can be especially helpful!

Pros And Cons Of Photodynamic Therapy

At Chang Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center, we want you to feel informed about your care. We will make sure to go over any pros and cons of treatment before you begin. When it comes to photodynamic therapy, we believe the benefits outweigh the cons. Since this therapy is not an invasive treatment, the only side effects you may experience include burning or stinging, some swelling or redness, or some crusting of the skin. Its benefits include:

This treatment is less risky and has less of a risk of side effects that will interrupt your day-to-day life. PDT does not involve any surgery. This means you will have less pain and scarring while you heal faster.

PDT only targets abnormal cells, so it will reduce the chance of harming your healthy skin.

The therapy can improve the texture of your skin, including the look of your pores, reducing acne scars and reducing wrinkles.

Is Photodynamic Therapy Right For You?

Photodynamic therapy is a valuable option for patients seeking a non-surgical solution for certain skin conditions. While it’s not suitable for all types of skin cancers or lesions, it is especially effective for surface-level abnormalities.

If you’re interested in PDT, we recommend contacting Chang Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center to discuss your options and eligibility. Dr. Chang is a board certified dermatologist who can help determine whether PDT is the right choice for your skin concerns. With proper diagnosis and treatment planning, photodynamic therapy can be an effective solution to better skin health.
